The complex was visited by the Emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties for annual ceremonies. It has been regarded as a Taoist temple, The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is a magnificent circular building, built on three levels of marble stone base, where the Emperor prayed for good harvests. In the Summer Palace, one finds a variety of palaces, gardens, and other classical-style architectural structures. In December 1998, UNESCO included the Summer Palace on its World Heritage List. It declared the Summer Palace "a masterpiece of Chinese landscape garden design".
