Our route from Senegal through much of Mali - sometimes on fairly good roads and sometimes on unmarked sand tracks. When our vehicle seemed to be stuck on top of a sand dune at midnight near the Maritanian border in western Mali we kept telling ourselves that it would make a good story if we survived.
