Forty years ago, poachers were leaving these Pacific beaches in northern Michoacan with truckloads of giant black turtles. Their meat was eaten and the shells were used to make tortoise-shell trinkets. Their population dropped dramatically.

But here, the local residents of an ancient tribe, called the Nagua, have taken it upon themselves to become guardians of these fascinating creatures.
